This collection is a translation of the writings of Rigdzin Chökyi Dragpa (1595-1659) that extract the essence of the Lama Gongdü (Embodiment of the Guru’s Realization). The Lama Gongdü is a terma treasure cycle of teachings that was taught by Padmasambhava to his close students, hidden, and then later discovered by the great tertön Sangye Lingpa (1340-1396). The teachings in the Lama Gongdü are vast and incredible. One of the most amazing features in this cycle is the incredible dzogchen instructions on cutting through (tregchö), direct crossing (tögal), and how to practice both in daytime light and in the darkness of the night, as well as in dark retreat. Likewise, the generation stage practices of the three roots contain powerful methods to access the guru, yidam, and dakini from within and merge our minds with the boundless realization of Padmasambhava, who is the essence of all the Buddhas in the three times.

There are two texts in this collection of translations. The first text is the Lama Gongdü Jewel Essence: Combined Collective Practices of the Embodiment of the Guru’s Realization. It is Rigdzin Chökyi Dragpa’s condensed presentation of Sangye Lingpa’s treasure known as the Wish-fulfilling Jewel Combined Collective Practices of the Three Roots. It details the main generation stage and completion stage aspects of the practices. For the generation stage we cultivate the three roots of the guru, yidam, and dakini, arising in the Padma Vajra Tsal form of Padmasambhava in union with the Secret Wisdom Dakini of the Expanse form of Mandarava. They are accompanied by a mandala of the eight pairs of wrathful herukas and dakinis. Then, there is the completion stage tummo inner fire practice where we work with our subtle vajra body of the three channels and four chakras.

There are also the instructions of the practice of the ten yogas:

  1. Yoga of sleeping in luminosity and emptiness or sleeping in the state of bliss
  2. Yoga of getting up from the state of emptiness and getting up in the state of bliss
  3. Yoga of washing
  4. Yoga of special mantra recitation
  5. Yoga of offerings and tormas
  6. Yoga of praise
  7. Yoga of eating foods and transforming meals into tummo inner fire puja offerings
  8. Yoga of engaging in daily activities
  9. Yoga of passion taking sexual union onto the path
  10. Yoga of the benefits

The second translation in this collection is called the Lama Gongdü Dzogchen Essence Crystal Vase Yoga of the Day and Night that Unites the Four Times into the Continuous Practice of the Main Instructions. It distills the key points of dzogchen practice from a much longer text in the Lama Gongdü itself. In particular, this concise guide focuses on instructions that allow us to practice dzogchen throughout the day and night continuously without interruption even bringing sleep and the process of waking up onto the path. There are four areas of instruction that correspond to the four times of the day.

  1. Evening Meditation of Gathering the Senses into their Natural Abodes

This involves nonconceptual meditation and tummo inner fire practice.

  1. Midnight Meditation of Placing Knowable Things into the Vase

This involves the dream yoga luminosity of deep sleep, gathering the mind into the fivefold light of the self-radiance of the five primordial wisdoms to dissolve into the dharmakaya within our hearts.

  1. Dawn Meditation Establishing the Innate Luminosity of the Primordial Wisdom of Dawn

This involves merging our awareness with the expanse. There is meditation on the luminous dharmakaya nature of mind and cutting through (tregchö) as well as meditating on the nature of all appearances as the five primordial wisdoms.

  1. Daytime Meditation Sealing Appearances

This involves cultivating the realization of dzogchen cutting through tregchö and the four stages of visions of dzogchen crossing over tögal, utilizing the postures and gazes of tögal.

Together, these instructions provide a very useful introduction to the broad scope and depth of the Lama Gongdü three roots and dzogchen instructions.

It is taught in the Lama Gongdü treasure:

“Furthermore, regarding the profound Lama Gongdü:
Seeing, hearing, remembering, or touching it
Protects from birth in the lower realms.
Even if one merely touches the volume to the crown of the head,
The door to the lower realms is blocked
And the beginning of the path to liberation is seized.”

It also says:

“If sentient beings of any type
Even just see, hear, touch, or make any connection with this,
Their karma will be exhausted
And they will come to dwell in the supreme sacred pure realm of Amitabha.
Therefore, for those who actually practice it,
It goes without saying that they will be liberated in one lifetime and in one body.”
