The heart-blood of Padmasambhava is the Khandro Nyingtig, a sacred treasure teaching that originated from the primordial mind. As recorded in its history, the great master resurrected the young Princess Pema Sal and entrusted these ultimate Dzogchen instructions to her and the wisdom dakini Yeshe Tsogyal. It was hidden as a treasure and discovered centuries later by the princess’s incarnation, Padma Ledrel Tsal, at the beginning of the 14th century. Longchenpa, the next incarnation of the princess, wrote many special commentaries on these teachings. He and his students taught them to his prophesized son, Dawa Dragpa Özer.

The 16th-century Drigung throne holder Rinchen Phüntshog remembered his previous life as Longchenpa’s son. In visions, Longchenpa empowered him to share this special lineage. The Luminous Wisdom Space Expanse is a key to this precious treasure trove, presenting the liberating instructions in a direct, step-by-step manner.

When the Khandro Nyingtig and Khandro Yangtig empowerments are given, this particular text was designed to be the essential pith instructions to go together with those empowerments and reading transmissions. This has been used for the last 500 years to distill the vast instructions contained in the larger Khandro Nyingtig and Khandro Yangtig collections that are difficult to study all at once. This publication includes the clear Tibetan original along with the English translation side by side to facilitate transmission.

These teachings provide a complete map for the dzogchen practitioner, from the beginning of the dzogchen path to the ultimate fruition. There are the preliminaries of the sixteen essential practices, including the profound Outer, Inner, and Secret Khorde Rushen. There is the main practice of the secret instructions of Direct Crossing (Tögal), using the targets of the body, speech, and mind and the four key points to strike the core of awareness. There are the subsequent qualities of the four stages of visions from the direct perception of reality to the final dissolution into reality. There are also the final supporting instructions. This is the path to transforming our conditioned human body form into the ultimate rainbow body without physical remainder. For the dedicated practitioner, this text is not merely a book, but a direct encounter with the living heart of the Great Perfection.
